Sunday, June 5th, 2011Reading instruction for children with ASD. What is the best way?
There is no way to teach reading to children with ASD. Learning styles differ between children such a number of strategies should be tried. Some children find and read read remarkably easy and fast to learn far beyond their ability, the words they read and understand the (This is called hyperlexia), while others may find learning to read much more difficult.
One approach is the sounds, the sounds, the learning of the letter means and mixing it together to read words to use. Another approach is to learn to read whole words, and be able to recognize them on sight.
I've found that may be more difficult in the whole teaching phonics as the usual case of normally developed children. Many young children with autism have little or no language, and can may not repeat the letter sounds accurately or not at all. It is a task for all to repeat itself in some children, just about anything, if directed. For You are able to teach them not to repeat only those notes, but use it as a decoding strategy for reading can be a huge task in be the fact.
Some children learn the letter sounds simple, but find it much harder to use their knowledge about these sounds, they blend into words the Reading. Once a child has learned that words are meaningful, you can increase their sight vocabulary by including other words from less direct interest of the child, but for them to learn important.
Motivation is everything: Find out what your child will be motivated by, Sometimes It is obvious, but do not be afraid to try different things. If your child with an image system (such as PECS) to make inquiries, try the pictures of their favorite multiple-request Terms and only cards with the words to. If the original card had the words and the pictures, you may find that your child has already learned to read the new cards removed, exposed to the words before. However, it is likely that you have to distinguish your child to teach the new cards. You already know that there is a sufficiently high motivation to ask these few words. If your child is interested in dealing with computers, then make to help use of computer programs to read them. There are many excellent packages available from stock.
